A 1962 Ferrari sold for 48 million euros, the second most expensive car ever auctioned

New York-based Sotheby's has turned an exclusive competition model into the most expensive marque vehicle ever awarded

It came to auction at the same time as pieces by Monet, Chagall, Picasso, Rothko or Giacometti, but has surpassed them all in value. It is a 1962 Ferrari that has been awarded for almost 50 million euros .

Sotheby's, in New York, sold this Monday morning an exclusive car from the Italian brand above paintings signed by these masters of the art. Specifically, he has done it for 51.7 million dollars, about 48.3 million euros.

It is one of the 36 250 GTO models that Ferrari built in the early 1960s for competition.

The auctioned vehicle actually ran the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The second most expensive vehicle ever auctioned

American businessman Jim Jaeger, CEO of Microwave, acquired it for half a million dollars in 1985, and now he has turned that purchase into a successful business, multiplying his investment 100 times.

However, it is not the most expensive vehicle ever auctioned, but the second . Last year, Sotheby's awarded a 1955 Mercerdes-Benz for more than 135 million euros .

In that case it was one of only two 300 SLR Coupé models that were built. The other is on display in the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart.

The Ferrari, in perfect condition and red in color, is indeed the most expensive Ferrari vehicle ever auctioned and eclipsed a day of sales focused on 19th and 20th century art.

Despite the milestone, the protagonist car of the afternoon has been sold below the 60 million dollars it started from , almost 56 million euros, according to specialized media.
