A 76-year-old resident of El Prat de Llobregat had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bellvitge Hospital for West Nile fever . This is what the El País newspaper reported this Wednesday and it was confirmed by the Department of Health . This is the first person infected by this virus in the demarcation of Barcelona. The woman was taken to the hospital a few weeks ago and this Wednesday required admission to the ICU because the virus and the previous pathologies she suffers from have complicated her situation.

"Currently, he is in the process of recovery, since beyond the infection, his state of health is delicate", explained sources from the Department of Health. For now there is no other case of this infection in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. This summer the Government detected the arrival of this virus in Catalonia through a bird in Cornellà, a municipality very close to El Prat, where the affected woman lives. West Nile fever has been spreading throughout Spain for a few months, with particular incidence in Andalusia and Extremadura.

A major outbreak in 2020 sets off alarms for health authorities

This summer there have also been two cases of this fever in the Valencian Country. The authorities fear that the outbreak will spread, as there are very serious precedents in the Spanish state itself. Three years ago now, coinciding with the first wave of Covid-19, an outbreak affected 80 people in Extremadura and Andalusia, eight of whom ended up dying.

Although most people are asymptomatic, those who do have symptoms experience pain, fatigue, fever, vomiting and skin rashes.
